WHAT IS TRUE COMMITMENT?

QUESTIONS OF COMMITMENT

Are you involved or committed? Do you know the real difference? Are you committed to ensuring quality at any costs? Are you committed to ensuring your associates understand the company’s vision and mission? Are you committed to satisfying your customers? Are you committed to being the very best at what you produce, at what you sell, and at what you provide in service?

DEFINITION

Webster’s definition of commitment: noun

1a.   An agreement or pledge to do something in the future.  // a commitment to improve conditions in the community.

  b.    Something pledged.  //the commitment of troops to the war.

  c.    The state or an instance of being obligated or emotionally impelled. //a commitment to a cause.

Webster does not emphasize or elaborate upon the cost of commitment in his definition. Do you think you are really committed to your company’s vision and mission or just involved? What is the cost of commitment versus involvement? Let me illustrate what commitment looks like.

AN ILLUSTRATION OF TRUE COMMITMENT

There once was a chicken and pig walking down the street in their small town. As they walked, they came across a sign posted on the window of a restaurant which read:

HAM & EGG BREAKFAST SPECIAL!!!

The pig says, “You’re not committed to breakfast. I am.”

The chicken said to the pig, “Hey, I’m involved in that!”

The pig turned to the chicken and said, “Yes, but you’re not committed!”

The next time you state you are committed to something, remember the story of the chicken and pig and the breakfast special. Then, you’ll understand the true meaning of commitment and involvement.
